These 4 tracks were on the Turbosphinct 12″ EP (out on Vinyl Solution in 1988). The tape was sent to me (by Frank Babel of Blasting Youth) as promotion-material when the band toured with ‘H.D.Q.’ They ended up doing a show for us twice (89-10-01 & 90-12-22).

Around that time ‘The Abs’ (from Newport, Wales) consisted of ‘Fatty Ashtray’ Jon Simpson (bass), John Oldfield (a.k.a. ‘The Rev’, ‘The Reverend’ or ‘Rev John D’; drums), ‘B. Funnunyon’ Bryn Jones (guitar/vocals) & ‘Boggs’ Barrie ‘Baz’ Oldfield (vocals/guitar). they played tuneful punk-rock (with “hook-heavy guitar-work”) and had tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Not the most PC band but fun…

In 1989 they had a mini-LP out entitled Mentalenema and their album Nail It Down (Blasting Youth recs) was released in 1990 (with ‘Dingo’ Richie Glover on bass). Later ‘Baz’ & ‘The Rev’ would form ‘Doctor Bison’ with Dickie Hammond of ‘H.D.Q.’). Nowadays Richie Glover plays in ‘Bad Sam’ with Dean Jeffery Beddis of ‘Cowboy Killers’…

The description below translates as something like: “Power, melody and humor, that stands for ‘The Abs’ – live on stage, when they ignite a 100% fireworks best power-pop-punk with their energized set. With their new LP (to be released coinciding with this tour)  Nail It Down – already an all time classic – these 4 kick-starters from Wales won’t have any problems to rock each club against the wall in a jiffy and turn each concert into a big party. With their earworm-like songs they hit the nail on the head, they can be listed along their examples (‘Hüsker Dü’, ‘The Ruts’, ‘The Damned’, ‘The Replacements’, etc.). There’s hope for punk-rock again!”.
