The Detonators (USA) Thousand Points Of Punk; tape (1991)

Standard

(side A): Thousand Points Of Lies / Twenty One Pigs / 11:59 / Slicksters [Bought For A Song] / Prison State / Bastards

(side B): 911 / Suffocation City / Twisted / Swallow [No Antidote] / No Balls By Design

Tape donated by Koen ‘Sies’ L. a.k.a. Mad Mohawk…

The Detonators were orginally based in Redondo Beach (near Los Angeles). Founders Bruce Hartnell and Juan Camacho toured Europe in the 80s and we did a couple of shows for them (87-04-03 – with drummer ‘Korky’ Ollerton & bassist Pat(rick) Fargher – & 89-05-04 – with bassist Bryson Carter & drummer Richard Cuellar.) The band relocated to Eugene (Oregon) in 1987 and released their LP Balls To You (recorded spring ’88 with Scott Adamo on drums & Bryson Carter on bass; licensed to Reiner Mettner’s Double A recs in Germany).

The tracks from the tape Thousand Points Of Punk were supposed to be released on vinyl in 1992 but that didn’t happen due to lack of funds. The line-up here was Juan Camacho (guitar), Bruce Hartnell (vocals/guitar), Darren Baker (bass) & Carl Fowler (drums).

In 2003, drummer Sean Schock, who had seen the band in Ohio in 1992 and had recently moved to Eugene, found Bruce and convinced him to release some of the music ‘The Detonators’ hadn’t released. The band also played a reunion-gig to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of their first LP (Emergency Broadcast Systems) with Bruce & Juan, Kirk Black on bass, and Scott Adamo on drums…

I wasn’t in the band yet on that ’89 European tour. I joined soon after they got back when their drummer quit. I did play on the Thousand Points Of Punk tape. We did a 2 month tour in ’91 around the States and Canada for that one. I haven’t talked to Juan and Bruce for a long time. I don’t know how to get a hold of them unfortunately. The last time I saw Bruce, he was playing in a different band, ‘Los Mex Pistols Del Norte’. Pretty cool stuff…

About the two songs listed on the cover (Slicksters & Swallow) but titled otherwise on this (Bought For A Song & No Antidote): If I were to take a guess, perhaps the tape got a second run and Bruce decided to make a change…?

Carl Fowler

Juan Camacho Punk, Pride and Promises (video-documentary) – Juan studied Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oregon and is/was owner of a restaurant in Eugene…

Bruce Hartnell is audio-engineer at the performing arts centre of the City of Eugene.

Maggot Slayer Overdrive (UK) promo (1993)

Standard

tracks : Hey Presto / I Nautilus / U Fried / I Spit On Your Lama / Constabulary Cat-Burial Confusion / Vinegar Flies

These songs are on a tape featuring two bands from Bristol (‘Maggot Slayer Overdrive’ & ‘Corpus Vile‘). I guess it was a promo for their split-LP released on Mike Foster’s label MCR.

The line-up of ‘M.S.O.’ was Alan O’Gallon (vocals), ‘Pigsey Rancid’ Turner a.k.a. Porkus Christie (guitar), John Finch a.k.a. Wild Johnny Zilch (guitar; ex ‘Lunatic Fringe’), ‘Rude Part The Bath’ (bass) & ‘Fybs’ a.k.a. Fybulator Pt II/ Dave Dimblebrain (drums). Earlier (spring ’89) ‘Nessun Dorma’s bassist Luke (R.I.P.) had left to join ‘Maggot Slayer Overdrive’ and played on the Maggot-Saki-Nightmare tape. Their music was described as “deranged punk/metal influenced crust”. In an interview (Eat Shit! #5) they admit: “Bristol people are loud and noisy.”…

Besides a few (live) tapes and a track on the ‘Crass’ covers compilation they also had an EP out on the German label Epistrophy (The Angry Buzzing Of A Million Flies; ’95): “M.S.O. had humor, a dark metal guitar and played a form of crustcore that derived from numerous deliriums and was never played again like this by any other band.”

My review in Tilt! #7: >>’M.S.O.’s music is a rough’n’raw twin-guitar based aural assault of thrashcore with punkrocky bits and occasional chorusses. Nothing too special but more than OK.<<

This is another tape from the collection of ‘Stel’ Steven R. It contains live recordings – amongst others probably from a show on April 15, 1983 in Altza (near Tolosa, Euskadi).

It was a big surprise to hear this, a live-set I had never heard before. The line-up was probably that of Post Mortem (LP released in 1994): with ‘Choli’ [Jorge Tremosa; guitarist], Jorge [Yepes; drummer], ‘Juanito’ [Juan R. Ferrando; bassist] & me. As far as I know, only one song is completely unreleased: the third one starting from the beginning, which is called Me Aburre Tu Cara [“your face bores me“]. The first one is Sólo Es Una Moda [“it’s just a fashion”], then Johnny Mofeta, followed by Me Aburre, Humanoides, Me Excitas, Al Borde De La Asfixia, Agresividad Controlada I, Agresividad Controlada II, Año 2000, Cementerio Caliente & Peligro Social… It must have been around 1980 and most of the songs were very new, that’s why they have different names. When I heard this, I was embarrassed because I was completely out of tune. (Never did anything right hahaha, a total anti-star.) Thanks for sending it to me, it’s been a trip back in time.

It could be that Javi of Destruye! fanzine did this tape…

Silvia Escario (‘Último Resorte’)

It’s almost certainly the handwriting of Javi Sayés, the creator of the Destruye! fanzine.

S(h)anti Iribar (‘‘Tortura Sistematika’)

Most likely this is a compilation of live gigs but not from just one gig. Those bands never played at the same time (99% sure). ‘Slips Y Sperma’ live? I’ve only heard one tape of a rehearsal with 4 or 5 songs, and to my knowledge they didn’t played many gigs. I was at that Altza gig but if some non-Basque bands played there, it would have been the Italian band ‘Impact’ (not sure), and the only Basque bands here are ‘R.I.P.’ and ‘Basura’. I don’t know any band called ‘Goma-2’. As far as I remember ‘Último Resorte’ only played with ‘R.I.P.’ & ‘Basura’ in Oñati [Euskadi], and I don’t think there’s live recordings of that. But there’s several live recordings of other ‘Último Resorte’ gigs. Can’t tell not much about ‘Interterror’ or ‘La U.V.I.’…

Javi Sayés did tons of compilation-tapes for many people here and abroad, so it could easily be from him. The ‘R.I.P.’ & ‘Basura’ songs could be from that Altza gig: those recordings were used for many tapes.

‘Richard Hardcross’ (Brigada Criminal fanzine)

No, the handwriting of the note is nót mine…

‘Basura’ were indeed from Rentería, a town 8 kilometres from San Sebastián. They didn’t record at the time but about 10 years ago Beltza recs released an album with old material of them. I also know ‘R.I.P.’ very well, they were very good friends. The songs here correspond to the maxi single they recorded with ‘Eskorbuto’ for Spansuls recs.

Private Jesus Detector (Bel) demo (1991)

Standard

tracks:

Alcohol Isn’t Just A Part Of My Life; It’s My Life! / Humanity Is Inhuman / In The Name Of Democracy / Blind Process / Commercials / Paralyse Power / Battlefields Of Decay / Whose Error? / Fear (‘Discard’ cover) / (Drunk With) Prejudice / Silence Is Consent / Take Over / A Symbol Of… / Dom Ljuger (‘Mob 47’ cover)

When ‘Chronic Disease was on its last feet, my mates Vincent ‘Leffe’ L. & ‘Vrokker’ Alain De Bock joined this new band as the drummer and singer. ‘Vrokker’ was in the band only in the beginning. The others (all from the Bruges area) were ‘Siesele’ Koen Lammens a.k.a. Mad Mohawk (bass), ‘Spatje’ Jurgen Fiems (vocals) and Peter ‘Pette’ Roose (guitar).

‘Sies’ told me ‘P.J.D.’ was actually derived from another band called ‘Capital Offence’ (1988/’89; fast-core) with ‘Sling’ (‘Chronic Disease’ drummer), ‘Spatje’, ‘Pette’, ‘Leffe’ & their friend Brand (R.I.P.).

They drew up this presentation for my zine (Tilt! #6). Announced as “the brand new ‘Discard’ & ‘Mob 47’ offshoot from Brugge” they soon did a few shows at the Vort’n Vis (90-08-25, 90-10-27 & 91-03-16). In April 1993 I organised them a brief tour (together with ‘Xinix’, in Belgium & The Netherlands)…

This is their first demo (out in ’91). It was self-released an came with a 10-page lyric-booklet. In 1992 they recorded for their first 7″ How Evil Can One Get?; that was released by the French label Urban Alert in ’94. ‘Vrokker’ is not mentioned on these… The band also appeared on Raf Vandeweyer’s compilation-tape The Belgian Campaign For Musical Destruction. and one of their shows at the V.V. was also recorded.

My review in Tilt! #6: >>I think these guys could’ve been part of the Swedish thrash wave of a few years ago… Grinding stuff with a shredding guitar, growling vocals and some pretty wild drumming. Mostly loud and mind-raping but they also have a feel for melody; the kind that makes your head nod. Very promising.<<
