This tape is part of the Punk Etc collection. Drummer Geoff sent it to Dirk Michiels after he’d ordered a record from his label… It contains the songs of the band’s Death Sports (A Political Game) tape (from 1985). Geoff wrote “We’re a 5-piece now, with a 2nd guitar. We sound heavier and better; with a slight touch of metal but still fast”…

‘Crucified Truth’ came from Brisbane (Queensland, Australia). The guys in the band were Anthony Ryan (vocals), Mark Hanlon (guitar), Paul Hanlon (bass) & Geoff Cummings (drums; replaced by Julian Kennedy in 1986). No idea who that second guitarist was. Some time after this, they released the 7″ EP Communication (1986). They also appeared on the hardcore punk compilation-LP Not So Lucky Country (Reactor recs, ’88).

Tim Yohannon wrote about this tape: “A wonderful noisy and crude assault on your ears. While the musicianship is basic and loud, there are structure, changes and thought behind it all. Good and intense, political as well.” (MRR #33, Feb ’86); and about their 7″: “Old Brit-punk style, simple on the beat, fast punk and growled political lyrics.” (MRR #44, Jan ’87).

Greg Baxter was the second guitarist but he wasn’t on any of the recordings except some live stuff (that none of us has anymore). He was ment to be on the 1st single but didn’t show up to the studio. He was a bit of a disaster area all round; nice guy but heaps of issues…

H.D.Q. (UK) Take Control; demo (1984)

Standard

(tracks): Take Control / First Butchers / Vulture Breath / Achtung!

This tape was contributed by ‘Mad Mohawk’ Koen L.

‘H.D.Q.’ (Hung, Drawn & Quartered) hailed from Sunderland. The original vocalist was ‘Pyley’ Steve/Stephen Pyle; David ‘Golly Golledge started singing for the band in 1986-87. I believe the others around that time were Richard ‘Dickie’ Hammond (guitar), ‘Lainey’ Andrew Laing (bass, later drums when Rob Bewick joined) & Anth Irwin (drums; guitarist of ‘Famous Imposters’). Before that ‘Lainey’ (drums), ‘Golly’ (guitar), ‘Dickie’ (bass) & ‘Pyley’ were in the band ‘Hex’.

In the early 80s ‘H.D.Q.’ recorded a demo and a mini-album for Endangered Music at Desert Sounds 8-track studio in Felling, England. Line-ups fluctuated but for the demo it was myself, ‘Dickie’, ‘Gaz’ [drums] and our friend/neighbour ‘Syko’ [bass]. One of the songs, Take Control, was released on vinyl: the compilation-LP called Relying On US… [1985] (along with ‘Oi Polloi’, the ‘Depraved’, ‘Stone The Crowz’ and ‘Criminal Justice’). I believe that EP was the first release for all the bands. This was my time in the band but the line-up changed often…

On the album Anth Irwin played drums and Andy Lane (‘Leatherface’ and now a Cockney Reject). We never received any covers for the 7″, we never even had a master-tape, just a cassette, hence the weird sound 🎶. I really don’t know the lyrics anymore, sorry; but it was all about government corruption and disinterest.

I actually don’t know who made that cover… Maybe some distro or fan… It does say ED14 so maybe Steve [Beatty] from Endangered Musik passed some around? Ours was less cartoon and more offensive hahaha…

Speed Air Play was the name of a bi-weekly HardCore show that ‘Röbi’ Robert Zollinger (Timbuktu Nachrichten/ Der Sensenmann fanzines), ‘Roli’ Roland Brümmer (Skatecore fanzine) and Claudio Pavan did on the local radio-station (LoRa) in Zürich (Switzerland). As Erich Keller (‘Fear Of God’ vocalist/ Megawimp fanzine/  Off The Disk recs) wrote: “They were really open-minded guys, happy to meet new kids that were into some of the same music they were into […] straight-edge and incredibly enthusiastic about HardCore as a lifestyle. Roli, formerly in the band ‘G.K.H.’, was an obsessed skater, Claudio was more the quiet guy – who later turned into a Krshna under the influence of ‘Youth Of Today’ – and Röbi was the driving-force.”.

Not all music was HardCore (punk), the guys also covered crossover, thrash, speedmetal and related genres. At some timepoint ‘Röbi’ also had a label and distribution (SM – named after his zine Der Sensenmann – Vertrieb) going…

This tape was conributed by Dirk Michiels (Punk Etc).

Some of the Speed Air Play shows are to be found online. ‘Röbi’ also donated the recordings of the X-mas special 86-12-25 (“Ultra-Noise” radioshow) where they played 100 bands in 60 minutes. Unfortunately I cannot copy that…

Stel’s review in Metallised #10

The contact on this tape is that of Amity recs (ran by people of the band ‘Dissent’) so I reckon the band comes from that area (Rapid City, South-Dakota)… The cover mentions ‘Fudge Ape’ (drums; Dave), ‘Kid Vermin’ (vocals; Todd), ‘Jungle Bunny’ (bass; Paul) & ‘Acid Pig’ (guitar; Jason) as line-up…

The band is featured on the Rapid City punk-archive website: >>Easily the least talented of the late eighties bands, ‘N.H.C.’ did not stand for anything [“just random letters”], but occasionally threw toast and condoms, once set a chicken on fire and tried to use flashpots a few times as well. Revolving heavy metal guitarists (and Jason H.) ended once we convinced Jason Fenner to put down his violin and learn how to play guitar. The demo-tracks sound horrible (recorded by Bob [Robert Baker, ‘Dissent’ guitarist, R.I.P.] as he learned what not to do on the’ Dissent’ album, like put reverb on the snare-drum and let Jason H. run the phaser on his amp at 11), but it wasn’t much better live…<< The band-members mentioned there: Dave Nesheim (drums), Paul Henry (bass), Todd Peterson (vocals), Jason Fenner (guitar): plus Jason Hotchkiss (guitar) & Pat Robertson (guitar).

That’s indeed what I wrote for the Rapid City Punk Rock Archive. It’s a little snarky but give it a go…
